The M14 is a powerful, select-fire battle rifle that replaced the M1 Garand and served prominently in the early years of the Vietnam War. Transferable examples are rare and highly sought after by collectors.

Upon the conclusion of the Korean War, the United States Ordnance Department wanted to simplify its small arms inventory. At the time, infantrymen were deployed with a large variety of weapons such as rifles, carbines, light and heavy machine guns, squad automatic rifles and submachine guns. The idea was to combine the military application of multiple firearms into one platform; thus, in 1957, the M14 was born. The M14 is a select-fire, gas-operated, shoulder fired rifle chambered in the new standardized 7.62mm NATO cartridge. It would effectively replace the M1 Garand, BAR and M1 Carbine in service due to its ability to serve as both a standard infantry rifle and the squad support weapon. Though seemingly an improvement over its predecessor, the M1 Garand, its stay in military service was short-lived. By 1964, the M14 was officially replaced by the M16 rifle and its intermediate 5.56mm NATO cartridge.
