It is illegal to possess a firearm in South Dakota if a person:

- Has been convicted of felony drug crime in the previous five years
- Has a misdemeanor conviction for a domestic violence offense in the previous year
- Is a minor (under 18 years old), unless in presence of a parent or legal guardian

- Has been convicted of a violent crime that is classified as a felony offense
